Metering experts from the water and energy sectors met in London for a WWT Round Table about smart metering on 11 May 2010, sponsored by consulting and business services group Mouchel.

The cross-utility panel, which included representatives from Ofwat, Ofgem and Defra, discussed the question - "How should the water industry engage in the smart metering initiative?"

Although the energy industry is ahead of water with its 2020 Smart Metering Initiative, there is uncertainty about the direction it will take in both sectors. Some delegates were heartened to hear that the gap is not as wide as they thought and that there are opportunities to work together to deliver compatible communications infrastructure for the future.
